Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee dies at the age of 89

Former Lok Sabha Speaker and expelled a member of CPM Somnath Chatterjee is no more. Today, early in the morning around 8 am, he died in Kolkata at a hospital. He was in the hospital since his stroke in June and was under observation and getting treatment. Chatterjee celebrated his 89th birthday on 29th June this year and since then his health was not doing any favour to him.

Somnath Chatterjee was a Lok Sabha Speaker between the year 2004-2009 and was a well-known face of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in which he gave 40 long years of his life after joining in 1968. He had even represented the party for the spam of 10 times in parliament and was highly acknowledged for his work. He was as one of the most brilliant men in the party.

He has owned all of his oratorical skill to the training he took in England after completing his masters in Law from the Cambridge University. He was even called to the bar from Middle Temple in London.

During his lifespan as a politician, he only lost one election to Mamata Banerjee from the Jadavpur constituency in 1984. However, he was able to do something irrevocably unique that was not even done by his close friend Jyoti Basu in 2008. He managed to defy the party diktat. However, when the support of CPM was withdrawn to the UPA-1 government, the party then ordered that Chatterjee must step down from his post as a Lok Sabha Speaker so that he can actually vote against the government.

But it didn’t sit well with Chatterjee and he didn’t. He was happy to be above political parties in the role of a Speaker. If he quit due to CPM then the integrity of the independence of a Speaker stature would be one thing that will be compromised.
So CPM expelled his from their party. However, initially, Somnath Chatterjee managed to hold his silence but he spoke out on the matter saying ‘that was the saddest day of his life’.

His expulsion created a lot of difference among the leaders of the party since many of them were against the verdict. He was in a critical condition in hospital and the isolated demands in the party that he must be bought back to the party with respect. This demand was even shown on a social media platform.
