Tens of thousands of farmers protested today at Delhi. And not just farmers, there were Students, Journalists, Social Activists, Politicians, Civilians and many more. They are protesting for meeting their demands, for two days. Today was the last day of the protest.
Who are the protestors?
The main body that protested today was All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee. AIKSCC is an umbrella body that comprises more than two hundred Small farmer unions. The unions hail from pan India, Including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and many other states.
What are they demanding?
There are mainly three demands of them:
All the pending loans of farmers should be waived for one time without any previous terms and conditions. When our reporter asked one of the protesters who was from Punjab that if it is their right to get a waiver, he replied, “We are not begging for it. It is our right, we owe it to the Govt. BJP’s manifesto included it in 2014 elections, we didn’t ask for it in the first place.” Tarpal Singh was a farmer of age 45-50 from Muktsar region of Punjab.
Swaminathan Commision report should be implemented. According to the report, A farmer’s crop should be bought from him with a minimum of 1.5 times of its price. This price is called the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
A special session of Parliament should be called, Just for solving problems of Farmers. The session should be called to discuss two private member bills, namely The Farmers’ Freedom from Indebtedness Bill, 2018, and The Farmers’ Right to Guaranteed Remunerative Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for Agricultural Commodities Bill, 2018.
It is the third time in a span of 18 months when the farmers have come from their homelands to march in Delhi. In fact, All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee was formed because the earlier attempts to meet their Demands were failed.
Who is backing them?
These poor farmers, of course, need a back to support and steer them. The main person who lies in the centre of all this is Veteran Journalist, Founder-Editor of the People's Archive of Rural India and agrarian expert P Sainath.
Sainath earlier claimed that Modi’s Fasal Bima Yojana is going to be proved bigger scam than Rafale deal.
He said, “It is a gigantic scam and if it continues for a few more years without change and in the present system, it is going to be a bigger scam than Rafale deal. It is more an insurance scheme for the banks and insurance company. It is completely public money that is getting spent without the private corporations spending any money of their own.”
Parties other than BJP took the chance to attack Govt. Leaders of more than twenty political parties, including Congress leaders like Rahul Gandhi, AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Sharad Pawar, Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, National Conference senior leader Farooq Abdullah and Loktantric Janta Dal Party leader Sharad Yadav, were present at the moment.
Kejriwal said on the stage, “Your Govt’s Bima Scheme is a total fraud. It's not even a Bima scheme, It's a Daka Scheme’. They are tyimg to loot you. They took crores from you, and in return, they are giving terms and conditions to you.”
