Statue of Rajiv Gandhi vandalised in Ludhiana

Historian and Biographer Ramachandra Guha once said, “I request to my friends, to my nearer and dearer that after my death, don’t make any statue of me. It’s the last thing that I would want in a country like India.”

Ram was right there, considering the politics of Statues nowadays. The news is, a statue of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was vandalised, coloured black by two people in Ludhiana, Punjab. According to a report by news agency PTI, the act was done on Tuesday morning.

Punjab Chief Minister and Congress leader Captain Amarinder Singh condemned the act done on the statue. He also alleged that the act is done by Shiromani Akali Dal members. Akali Dal is the rival party of Congress in Punjab.

Captain Amarinder Singh tweeted against the act. He writes, “Strongly condemn vandalisation of Rajiv Gandhi's statue by Akali Dal workers in Ludhiana. Have asked Police to identify the guilty & take strict action. Sukhbir Singh Badal (President of Shiromani Akali Dal) should apologise to people of Punjab for this obnoxious act.

The people who vandalised the Statue blamed Rajiv Gandhi for the 1984 Sikh Massacre. They are demanding to remove statues of Rajiv Gandhi from everywhere in India, according to PTI.

Later, the statue the cleaned by the Congress workers.

Debate on the credibility of Rajiv Gandhi is going on in the country since last few days. A demand was made in the Delhi Assembly last week to revoke Rajiv Gandhi’s Bharat Ratna award.
