Due to corona virus induced lockdown in the country, every shop was closed including liquor shops. Now, when country is under unlocking procedure where several eases are given to people, so liquor can also be home-delivered, as per reports. In West Bengal and some parts of Siliguri, the services of home delivery of liquor have been started. According to news agency PTI, companies like Amazon and Alibaba-backed companies got the green chit from govt for home delivery of liquor. Bigbasket said over the opportunity that it is company’s first foray into country’s liquor delivery segment. West Bengal’s State Beverages Corporation Ltd. (BevCo) invited the agreement with two companies and will proceed when companies are eligible as per needs and demands. Since BevCo is sole liquor wholesaler in West Bengal so it has invited two other Kolkata based companies namely Senrysa Technologies Pvt. Ltd. and Golden Goenka Commerce Pvt Ltd. for signing the agreement. Big basket’s CEO Hari Menon also stated that, “I cannot confirm now how soon we will start, but yes it will be the first for the company."
While Amazon did not commit any approval over such news. On the other hand, food delivering companies like Zomato and Swiggy have already started delivering in West Bengal and Siliguri. In order to reduce the line of people outside liquor shops, companies like HipBar and Spencer’s have also tended to join the home-delivery fray. However, Jharkhand was first state in the country giving approval to home delivery of liquor. In the process, other eight-lesser known companies have also asked BevCo regarding the eligibility and procedures for joining hand in order to increase the reach and capability of placing online orders.
