Following India, Australia May Boycott Birmingham

Australia, after India, can boycott the competition if shooting is not included in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) decided in June that shooting would not be allowed in the 2022 Games in Birmingham. This will be the first time since 1970 that there will be no shooting in the Commonwealth Games.

Following this decision of CGF, the demand for a boycott of Birmingham Commonwealth Games-2222 in India has started coming up. Veteran shooter Heena Sidhu recently said that India should consider boycotting the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham in 2022. After the statement of Heena, IOA President Narendra Batra had said that boycott of sports could be an option.

After India, Australia has also joined this demand. Shooters Union Australia (SUA) has demanded this. It is a lobby group that claims to represent thousands of firearm owners and people in Australia and is affiliated with the National Rifle Association in the US. Australia won nine medals, including three gold medals, at the Commonwealth Games held at Gold Coast last year and was the second-highest medal-winning country after India.

SUA President Graham Park said, "Australia should stand with India in seeking to re-engage shooting in the 2022 Commonwealth Games." If he doesn't, then be prepared to boycott it."

Park said, "Australia is globally known for our sporting achievements and arbitrarily depriving our top shooters of potential is not right for our athletes who work hard." This shows that the government does not think about your game. It reduces the possibility of medals for us which is a question of our national reputation. ”

Former Australian shooting team manager Jan Linsley claimed that the removal of shooting from Birmingham 2022 would harm the future of sports in Australia. He said, "Obviously if there is no shooting in the Birmingham Games then the funding for top-level shooting training in Australia will be reduced. This will give a big push to our efforts to prepare the shooters for the Olympics and make them eligible to win medals. ”
